Instead of looking back on the past year and reflecting on the good and bad, we’re more of the mind to forge ahead and focus on the amazing things we can look forward to in 2017.
In the Chinese zodiac, 2017 is the year of the rooster which we think is apropos since 2017 will be a wake-up call to the skin care industry which will spur a ton of incredible innovations and cause a dermatological renaissance. That’s our 2017 resolution, at least.
The way technology in general is progressing makes it seem like people aren’t satisfied with their tech only performing its intended function. Your computer is also your TV. Your watch is also your phone. Your phone is also your GPS, computer, radio, portal to all things Lira Clinical, etc.
And, just like people want their every-day technology to perform multiple function to make their lives easier, they also want their skin care products to double and triple down on their effectiveness. The trend of multi-faceted skin care products, which really got its footing in 2016, is going to play a huge part in your skin care routines in 2017. The reason behind this surge in multi-facted products is the core of innovation. Its cause and effect problem solving, the problem being cluttered back bars and lengthy skin care routines, and the solution being simplifying your routines by maximizing the individual products’ results.
So next year look for your exfoliators to also be hydrators, your beauty oils to also be brighteners, and all of your products to also be SPFs. Which leads us to our next trend…
The sun and your skin have a tricky relationship. We need the vitamin D from the sun to stay healthy (plus you get a sweet tan), but too much of the sun’s UV radiation and your skin cells start to show some wear and tear. Think of it like your relationship with your one wild friend from back in the day who is a blast to hang out with for a bit, but if you keep them around for too long you find yourself cry-eating a Wendy’s double cheeseburger at 4 am while they loudly argue with the cashier about whether or not Grease 2 was better that the original (too specific?).
The point is we all need protection from the sun on a daily basis and it only stands to reason that all of your skin care products will offer that type of protection. 2016 showed a big uptick in SPF products and that trend will definitely continue well into 2017 and beyond.
Despite what immature school-yard rhymes would have you believe, coconuts are actually the magical fruit, not beans. Beans are legumes. Coconuts, on the other hand, are fruits (and nuts and seeds) that are chocked full of vitamins and skin-healthy ingredients and are just now coming back into vogue.
Coconut-based skin care products are nothing new per se, but their ingredients are just recently being utilized to their maximum efficacy. Coconut oil in particular is going to be a mainstay of 2017 skin care due to its moisturizing, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties. You can read more about the incredible skin benefits of coconuts here, or just take our word for it: 2017 will go nuts for coconuts.
When you pay attention to the skin care industry for a while, you’ll start to notice certain buzz-words that the industry latches onto for a while that start showing up on the packaging of every new product that year. 2017 is the year of the Plump.
When you see the word “plump” used to describe a product, 9/10 it is in reference to the hydrating effect of the product. When your skin is properly hydrated, it looks healthy and radiant and reduces sagging and wrinkles. This effect can be described as plump, firm, full, taut, or a number of other adjectives but, for whatever reason, 2017 seems to be a “plump” year.
Look for skin care products to use more water-based ingredients which will provide your skin with the hydration it needs and give it that “plump” look as advertised.
